Cool article about yesterday’s simultaneous retirement of 20 of American Airlines MD-80 fleet, including 3 license built by SAIC in China for TWA. Gonna miss these - while they were noisy in the back they were faster than the Boeings and Airbuses replacing them. Apparently they’re a bit underpowered and the stubbier wing and wing layout makes them a handful to fly, but they were well built airplanes.

Good video on the operation and cockpit features of the MD-80. Amazingly the MD-80 shares a lot with other projects and aircraft:

Thanks - what a great video. Cool to see all the quirks and nice features from a pilot’s perspective.

It would be interesting to know how many of the quirks and features carried over after Boeing started producing them as the Boeing 717.
